Does anyone have any experience with a place called "A Place for Mom"? It is nationwide. I found it on the internet. A man from there called me last night and we talked for quite awhile. He then sent me names of several group homes, ASL, ALF in our area that I could look into. He told me the ones with dementia units, the costs and other facts about them. He also told me which ones have respite and which ones did not but would be good for long term.
He also told me about a Veteran's benefit of $1500 monthly that Bill could possibly qualify for.
From what I read on line, they are paid something by the places the tell you about if you decide to go there.

If you know anything or have heard anything good or bad, would you let me know.

Joyce,

I've never heard of it. But I sure am going to look into it. If you find out anymore info, pass it on, and I'll do the same.

Jackie,
I'll try to send you a copy of the email he sent me. The names of the facilities won't benefit you, but it will give you an idea of the information he has provided so far. He said he would give me a chance to check on some of them and will call me back. If these don't satisfy me he'll send me more.

Dear Joyce,

(Note: I gave you a lot of communities to consider, hopefully not too much. Please see my comments next to some of them. All of these are less expensive than a nursing home. If you get $1500 VA Aid and Attendance, you will be able to afford the more expensive places. )

Thank you for contacting A Place for Mom. Having worked with hundreds of families, I know that selecting a new home or services for a loved one can be difficult and stressful. Yet many people try to make this important decision without the advice of a trained professional. As your FREE personal Eldercare Advisor, I am here to answer questions and provide you with referrals and details on senior care options in your area.

The first step in making a good decision is to visit a few communities or care providers. I have taken some time and selected several care providers that should meet your needs. I can help you set up a schedule to tour, and please feel free to contact our partners listed below to learn more and arrange tours. The selected care providers may also call you to schedule a visit. After you tour, give me a call or I will contact you and we can discuss if they met your needs. If not, I can offer more options for you.

When you talk to or tour any of the care providers listed below, be sure to tell them Paul Flancbaum at A Place for Mom referred you! Your personal referral will ensure our service remains freely available to families. Please call or e-mail me anytime! I am always interested in knowing how your search is going and am ready to assist you in any way I can.

Joyce,

I have experience with A Place For Mom. I used their services about 2 years ago when my parents were still living in their won apartment. It is a nation wide company that has local 'chapters/segments'. The man I worked with was named Roger and it was here in the Lehigh Valley in PA. He interviewed and hired someone to come to my parents apartment 4 hours a day, clean, cook a hot noon meal, and help mom around the house, along with providing some company. For me it worked wonderfully...for about 2 months, then mom fell and I needed to come up with a more permanent solution. So my experience was good, but it was limited. The best thing I could say is that Roger who was the care consultant was available 24 hours/day and was incredibly responsive...returning any of my calls within 15 minutes.

Hope this helps.

Anita

Thanks Anita,

I just don't trust people the way I use to. It sounds like a good place to go for help.
But I wanted to double check with others I do trust.

Joyce,

When we were first looking for respite care, I contacted A Place for Mom via the internet.

They were very good at keeping us updated on any places in the Jackson County area for such services and they would have helped us if we needed them in the home while we were at work.

They are very caring individuals... and I could send an e-mail with any questions about ALZ or even just to vent. I would receive a personal response from our rep along with articles on whatever it was I needed.

Don't know how expensive they are, but they are definitely worth a looksie.

How bizarre, my sister-in-law has been trying to get me to call a lady from there for a couple of weeks now. I haven't called because my sister-in-law was talking about homes mom could go to and I just don't think it's time for that yet. I was also afraid to hear the costs - from the video and descriptions on their web site, it looks like they represent some really beautiful properties (that are probably way beyond our reach).

Joyce,
I agree completely about not trusting people! I am sure it is like any 'national' agency, the local chapters are what is important. For you I am sure to check those out would be of upmost importance. I hope you are able to find some local people who have used them and can give you some feedback...be it positive or negative..to help you make an informed decision. Please keep us all informed!

Joyce:

From my experience they were wonderful...they checked out whatever and who ever was requested--the only problem I had was telling them to contact POA -- that I was sick and didn't have input..but did do well in ressearching..
they were the ones to notify me about veterans and tried to help with figuring out financial details (I stayed out of a lot of that--sibs....)

I like that the list gives you some idea of what is expensive and what is more reasonable. I think I would trust the ratings on the care, because I remember Manoogian Manor in Livonia from when I was growing up (it's been there forever) and it is an EXCELLENT place, always has been.

I'm bringing this thread back up to the top because I have an appointment with A Place for Mom to come to my home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Right now, we are looking at in-home assistance/companionship a few evenings a week while I am working to start. I am here while I'm working, but I always have an ear listening for what she is doing in the living room. It would be nice to know someone is right there to help with the remote control, help make coffee and just talk to her.

Howdy,

I didn't even think about talking to them about in home assistance. Let me know what you find out what they say. It would be nice to have someone that I could call to come over for a few hours.
I do have a volunteer from hospice, but every time I start getting use to them, they can't come.

Gosh, all this time I've been going crazy making calls to replace my Granny Nanny. Forgot about "a place for Mom" and didnt' realize they came out to the home.

I do have someone coming on Monday to interview, but if it doesn't work out, I'm going to call them. Thanks Howdy for bringing this up to the top and reminding us.

Would you let us know how it turns out, and any info that you get?

Thanks,
Jackie

I had good luck with A Place for Mom in San Diego...they gave me a list of places, most were beyond my parents frugal means, but the rep did try...she also gave me access to other services and places that might work with them financially. One place was VERY good but in an iffy neighborhood on a busy street, this is when they were still 'somewhat' able to take care of themselves. That's when I placed them in the board & care instead.

The place dad is in (and where they were together) was GREAT but too expensive when we looked, but they entered as 'evacuees' from the fires and when the management found out that she is friends with my brother, so we've gotten a 'discount'

First question they all asked was 'military', unfortunately Stepdad was not in the Armed Forces so that limited their income.

The 'chapter' here is under Eldersource, which I think is a government program, but they were thourough in all the places and services available...I had no idea!!

Take go*d care, Shaye
