Last night I read in the local newspaper about women who are making lap quilts for Alzheimer's patients in the local nursing homes. They got the idea from women in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The quilts are about a yard square and have 4-6 inch squares. They are called touch quilts because each square has a different texture. Color matters but it is the feel of a satin or flannelette square that is important. The quilts are tied instead of quilted and the ties are left long enough to get the feeling of the yarn. It looks from the picture that at least an inch is left.
I have been making Linus quilts for quite a few years but I think I may see about joining this group. Linus quilts are given to children in the hospital as a comfort measure. Mine go to the oncology unit near here. I can't give up the Linus quilts so will just have to make time to do both.

P.S. I could use some prayers this week as I am being tested AGAIN for thyroid cancer. I went through two surgeries and a treatment 17 years ago and now the Dr. thinks it is back after seeing my latest CT scan. I will get the results in May from this weeks tests.

The quilt idea is great.
I'm more concerned about you right now. How are you feeling? Do you still have your thyroid? I would think they would have removed it the first time.
Why does it always have to take so long to get the results of tests? I will be saying extra prayers that all the results come back good.

I'll be thinking of you.

Thanks Joyce. With the first surgery I had the tumor removed and then in a second surgery my thyroid was removed. After that I had a radioactive iodine treatment. After the treatment the Dr. said that my scan showed a very small amount of cancer left. It has stayed the same for all of these years until this last CT scan and apparently it has started to grow again. The first appointment I could get is May 8th. It is a long time to wait but I'm hoping the Dr. will call me. We have a good relationship because he also treats my daughter who has thyroid cancer and he also sees my son who had a precancerous thyroid removed. I just don't need this now when I'm taking care of my mom. Luckily I have lots of support if I do have to have surgery again.

I'm with Joyce,
Wondering how YOU are. Thanks for sharing with us. I will definitely say some prayers for you to receive good news. It does sound like it(the resumed growing) has been caught early? That is a good thing. The waiting is the WORST!

I just got back from the my second-ever visit to a dermatologist, who removed 2 moles. I have 9 to go, and a white bump on my nose.
We are not concerned. She told me she just removes any mole that has black on it.

I am intrigued by the quilt idea. I was just-no kidding-making a list of any hand-made Christmas gifts I can make this year, and small quilts was one of them. I do have a NH and several ALF close by. Hmmmmm...now I need to learn to quilt!

I just had a flash-back, to when "The Big One"(now 19) was a baby, and we had this sofa pillow that had a rabbit in the center, and the border was filled with tiny-flowered fabric. We called it his "nit pickin' pillow" because he would sit for the longest time, with that pillow on his lap, and pick at the flowers.

PLEASE, let us know if you hear anything about your tests!

Hi Joyce and Maebee, I was so surprised today because the Dr. called me. I didn't have to wait until I saw him in May for the results of my tests. I had shaking knees when I heard his voice but he assures me that all is well. There is a negligible amount of cancer that is too small to either have surgery or a treatment for. This is the same news that I have had for over 15 years so once again I can heave a sigh of relief and do the little Russian dance of joy. Thanks so much for your concern and prayers.

I can't dance like Maebee but in my own way of dancing, I'm dancing with you.
It is so good to hear good news.
