Early onset dementia is a term that covers a range of diseases affecting memory and thinking in people under the age of 65. Although most dementias affect people who are elderly, occasionally younger people are diagnosed with dementia. Dementia has been diagnosed in people in their 50's, 40's and even in their 30's. Dementia in younger people is much less common than dementia occurring after the age of 65. For this reason it can be difficult to diagnose, and its incidence in the community is still not clear. The sense of loss for the person with younger onset dementia and their family can be enormous. Loss of income, loss of self esteem, and loss of purpose in life may be common experiences of those diagnosed with EO dementia.

As technology becomes more modernized they are able to diagnose and treat MORE individuals with EOAD in their 30's & 40's. It isn't that the disease is uncommon in these ages but rather the stigma of the disease has been so strong that diagnoses were not being made and the rapid onset of progression set in due to lack of treatment.

As individuals as myself are being given the opportunity to speak out publicly to professionals and the public as stated by the Association, the numbers are going to rise.

The state of Missouri was awarded a grant for a "pilot" program in which 1 individual is chosen from their region for an Ad Campaign. The purpose is for this person to be a PR for the Region to reach out to families and be heard more publicly to raise awareness and help walk others through this horid mist.

Early onset dementia symptoms are not always easy to spot, or diagnose. Dementia can be defined as a persistent decline in intellectual function. It involves Memory,Problem or SolvingAnd Learning Dementia is usually thought of as a health concern of the elderly but for a few patients, a dementia diagnosis comes earlier. This loss of memory and cognitive abilities at a younger age is called early onset dementia.thanks for sharing information!
