I went on line yesterday and ordered hospital gowns for Bill. One of my hardest jobs is getting him to roll in bed to change him. Last night I got one of my plain long gowns and cut it up the back, about 6" short of the neck. and put that on him when he went to bed. It was amazing how much that cut down on me rolling him around to take his pants and diaper off and then having to roll him again to get them back on. This morning was the same. I rolled him for the diaper change and then I left the gown on. The aide can get him dressed when she gets here.
I haven't got the hang of rolling him one direction and doing everything on one side before rolling him the other way and finishing everything. The poor guy has got to be feeling drunk by the time I finish rolling him back and forth.

I hope the gowns get here real quick because I don't have many plain gowns to cut up and even if it is easier, I don't want to put a pink frilly one on him.
I priced gowns on line and was able to get them for $25 for 6 plus shipping. At the store they were asking $16 and up. If anyone knows where I can go to the store and get them, let me know. The only place I looked was a medical supply store. Didn't have time to look elsewhere.

Joyce,

I wonder if a hospital would give you a few. Or at least order some for you and give you a break in price on them. Or, do you know anyone that works at a hospital that can get some for you?

Jackie

Oh gosh, I can just picture Bill in a pink frilly gown. :)
I wish I still had some to send you. Everytime that Helen was in the hospital, she made me steal gowns for her. I don't know why cuz she didn't wear them but she had 2 big drawers full of them.

I wish you still had some too Lori.
You should see him in my night gown with a cat on the front. At least there's no ruffles or flowers on it and it is gray.

I'll have to think if I know someone who works in a hospitle, Jackie. My SIL is in the hospitle more than she is out, maybe she could get me some.

I should have "borrowed" some from the NH where Bill was. They owe me something for the terrible job they did.

Guess I could go in for another mammogram, they always have a big bin full of gowns. Think I'll pass on this one. A few gowns isn't worth going twice in one year.

I found them on line at the Assisted Living Store.Com.

They are on their way now. I got six for $33.94 which included $8 for the shipping but cheaper than the medical supply stores even with shipping. They are probably the same ones you found Joyce. Longer than some I found and longer sleeves which we need here.

I was just hoping I could find them at a store so I could just go get them and start using them. When I decide I want something, I don't like to have to wait. That's why I'm short one night gown now.

Joyce - I hope the clothing is working well. I curious to know if you have tried any adaptive clothing. It is a bit on the pricey side and I am hesitant to make a large purchase.

iHelp,
Don't think I've met you before, but hi and I'm glad you're here.

My husband passed away this past Feb. and now I'm trying to learn how to go on by byself, it's not easy. Coming here helps a lot because there are a lot of great people here.

As for adaptive clothing, I ordered the gowns and they saved me a lot of hard work when it came to bedtime and getting up in the morning. The gowns weren't too expensive. I got six on line for less than $35. All the stores I checked on were asking almost $20 for one. They are well worth the money. Especially if your LO is unable to help when it comes to dressing and undressing. Before I ordered wheelchair pants for him, I cut the legs off a pair of sweats and put those on him like leg warmers. With the gowns, even with a blanket over his lap, the back of his legs were bare. By using the leg warmers, it made me feel warmer even if it didn't make any difference with him.

One thing I did even with the gowns was to use his t shirts by cutting them up the back, just to the neck, and putting those under the gown. That way he wasn't completly bare when I took the gown off. That was just me and the fact that Bill would never go without a t shirt on.

I also ordered wheelchair pants for him. With these I was able to put his pants on while he was sitting in his chair. I got sweats for him and also sweat shirts that fastened up the back. These were expensive but worth it. They ran $50 for the set. I also found them on line by searching "wheel chair pants". I usually put the pants on while he was still in bed. It didn't require any rolling him back and forth. Then I'd use the hoyer lift to move him to his chair.

First I will take my foot out of my mouth and say I am very sorry to hear about your loss. God bless. My grandma "toostes", first generation Irish would of had something more elegant to say to sidestep my awkward ignorance. (sigh)

I am with you on the shirt. Preservation of one's dignity is so important not only for them but yourself. I remember having to carrying my grandma to do daily task (i.e. bathroom) because a wheelchair just would not fit (it left to some lasting memories for a grandson/grandmother to have) in my parents hallway. It made me learn a lot of about life and duty. I think our desire to maintain some normalcy might be my/our desire to preserve images and memories of them. What do you think?

Any ways thanks for the real world info, I am working through trying to find products that provide true value for Mrs. N and for my journey. The thing is that Adaptive clothing is so expensive. I going to do some research and see if I can not find a supplier that will give me volume pricing. I am a cheap man and really don't see why adaptive pants have to cost 50 dollars. I will post what I find out.

On a light note, I am with Bill wearing a t-shirt is a must, not wearing one is like not wearing pants in public. Sure I would do it but it would be unsettling. (smile)

Cheers

That's Bill. Modest.

The $50 was for the pants and the shirts, but I agree that is a lot. But I guess I figured he was worth it. I am now saving them for his brother who also has AD and I'm sure will need them eventually.

Don't worry about foot in the mouth. I have to go back and check to see if a LO has passed before I answer someone.
The people here are very understanding and never criticize our friends.

I am on line more when I am down state and have wireless internet instead of dial up.

Take care.

Much of the clothing can be made quite easily, and sewing is really quite easy. For example, you can add buttons or a zipper to the back of a sweatshirt for just a few dollars and it takes just a few minutes. If you don't sew I imagine most of us knows somebody who has a sewing machine and can stitch a zipper on.

I'm very tall and thin and have to tailor much of my own clothing, and those skills come in handy in caring for my grandmother as well. I've altered a lot of her clothing to make it fit better as she looses weight or to make it easier for us to manage in our dressing/bathing routine. Sewing machines pay for themselves very quickly...

It's really amazing what you can make or do with what you have. I was able to create a lot of things to make things easier for both of us.
I used velcro instead of zippers or snaps because it was easier to fasten/unfasten
