I talked to my SIL about the Elgin hotel and got some more info for you.

He suggested that your son take 80 all the way to 355 (just before Joliet, Il ) and take that to 290 and then on to 90. It may be a few miles longer, but not much. It will keep him away from the heavy traffic in Chicago. Especially if he plans on picking up 90 and going through Chicago. The most congestion he would run into would be for about 20-30 miles past Gary, Ind. At that point 80/90 sort of divides with the left two lanes going off to 294. Son would have to stay in the right two lanes to continue on 80.
The area around the hotel is not built up a lot and there isn't much traffic around there. SIL said it should be perfect for him. Maybe about a 5-6 hour drive from your house..not a bad drive. I've took that route this spring. If his map quest leads him up 294 to 290, forget that because 294 is under construction at that point and a big pain to drive.

I'll give Hubby and Son the info, and have them go over the map. He was going to take 94 to 90, and 90 right through Chicago. You are a Godsend!

What ever he does, tell him NOT to take 90 through Chicago. The traffic is horrendous. I know it may be a guy thing but, my SIL lives there and said he woundn't take it if there was anyway to avoid it.
