Has anyone used a reclining wheelchair? If so, how did you like it? Could you tell me about it as far as size, cost, comfort, weight, and etc.
I'm debating on getting one for Bill so he can lay back in it and take a snooze. This way I don't have to worry about transferring him to what I think would be a more comfortable chair when he decides he wants to go to sleep.

joyce,
That reclining wheelchair really sounds like a good idea. I don't know anything about them, but I would imagine it would have to be much more comfortable for Bill than a regular one. I know when mom falls asleep in her recliner, and she doesnt' have it reclined, she wakes up with a stiff neck and shoulders. So I do try to push her back when I notice.

You might want to look on that site that Karenlee sent us. They just may have some info on that about price etc.

Jackie

Joyce,
I had a few minutes and googled two things. Reclining wheelchairs and Will medicare pay for reclining wheelchairs. I would have sent you the sites, but there were so many. Of course like anything else that medicare pays for, there is certain criterial for obtaining a reclining wheelchair, and from what I read, it sounds like Bill would meet that criteria, but only you would know that for sure.

The wheelchairs seem to run between $450 and as much as $1,500. There weights seem to be from 40 to 50 pounds. And they do show pictures of them.

So if you get the chance, google those two things, and read up on them when you can. Many of the sites had 800 numbers that you could call to find out more info, and if the procedure for medicare to possibly pay.

Hope this was a little helpful.

Jackie

Thans Jackie,
I have been doing some research on them, too, and I think I found one that I would like. I will first check with hospice and see if they would provide one. If not I will ask the doctor if he would write me a prescription for one.
There is no way I'm going to be able to keep transferring him from one chair to another. Especially if he isn't cooperative.

I was hoping that someone had actually used one and could give their opinion on it.

Thanks again for doing all your research

From what I've found on line they are running from $450 up to what ever you want to spend.
I will talk to hospice Monday and see if they would furnish one. If they don't the next step would be to ask the doctor to write a prescription. How ever I get it, even if I have to pay for it myself, I think I will get one.
I am able to get Bill out of bed and into his wheelchair but I am not able to move him from the wheelchair to his recliner several times a day. He is losing weight but he is still pretty heavy for me to lift him. With a recliner chair, I will feel comfortable letting him sit in it all day. I hate to see him sleeping in his chair now with his head falling back.
Other than heigth, they're not any bigger than a regular chair.
I'll let you know if and when I get one and how it works out.

After doing all the research on the reclining wheelchair, I found out today that hospice will provide us with one. It's supposed to be delivered today. I'll let you know how it works.
Guess it never hurts to ask.
