The doctor increased Bill's seroquel to 100 mg 3xs a day. He started that routine on Saturday and that night he woke up and yelled out something, couldn't understand what he said and then went back to sleep. Last night he did the same thing. It's like he had a nightmare and it scared him and woke him up.

Has anyone else noticed this with their LO who was/is on that dosage of seroquel? He has never done this before and I'm wondering if the seroquel is causing it.

I will call hospice today and talk to them about it.

There isn't much change in him. He doesn't seem to be as restless and I was able to get him up yesterday for the morning. He slept in his wheelchair so I'm not sure what good it did to get him up except to change his position. He doesn't want to eat or drink. He drank a cup of coffee in the morning and after that I doubt he drank another four ounces all day. Breakfast consisted of his coffee and a small bowl of oatmeal. Lunch and dinner may have amounted to a cup of food plus he ate about half a cup of choc. pudding.
Not as much urine output. Diaper was wet when he woke up but he was soaked like he usually is. Bowel movement was very loose and watery, but only the one movement for the day.

He is still sleeping so I will wait and see what the day brings

Joyce, I forget the appropriate name for this, but have been warned by friends, that some patients have the exact opposite response to that kind of medication. It is an anti-phycotic (spelling! ) but may actually make the patient, hyper, and have hullucinations, etc. I would be interested in what Hospice has to say. Have you ever tried Resperil? (Again spelling! Gosh, I wish we had spell-check in here!) I remember that it was like a miracle drug, for Johanna C's Mom.

He's been on seroquel for probably two years with no side affects. Yesterday he was real good and I was thinking how good he looked. Today no urine and not slept all day which is very unusual for him. He is very restless and probably very uncomfortable since he hasn't urinated since sometimes last night.

The hospice nurse is on the way here so I'll see what they will do and say. If they have to cath him, it will be like pulling teeth. I can't imagine him cooperating .

I will feel better after they check him out to see what's going on.

They tried resperdal (sp) when he was in the hospital once and said that it didn't help him. They only gave him one dose so I don't know how they could tell.

I have to get back to him, will get back later.

Thanks Joyce, keep us up to date, even to the moment, if you need to. I promise to respond, not just lurk, so you don't feel so alone. Even if I don't know what I am talking about, I think it helps, to know that someone cares, and I do.

It does help Sky, just knowing someone is here.
I did an update on the other post. "Bill's update" or whatever I called it.

See how flustered I am. This is "Bill's update".

I posted on "kidney shut down".

He finally went. But is still restless.

I'll try to remember that, sorry.

You're too young for a mini heart attack. Besides you have too much work to do to have one.

Thanks again for keeping me company last night.

It's another day, lets see what this day brings.

Hey Joyce, my grandmother was on seroquel for some time, and she was having more incontinence, her appetite also went down while she was on it. Once she got off she seemed much more clear and her eating was better, but her aggression increased. I think she was prescribed too much. She takes it once at night now, and it seems to help her sleep and doesnt affect her that bad during the day. Sometimes these medications can have affects on the body and mind depending on what stage the AD patient is, and also how long they are taking them for. You should call the pharmacist if you have concerns, they could probably give you better info.

Hi Joyce, Just got on this morning for a moment and read all that is going on with Bill. I'm so sorry. My mom has been on 100mg of Seroquel 3X's a day since June or thereabouts, our desperate attempt to keep her at home. She seems fine on it, no bad side affects, she eats great and is still continent, the only issue is the horrible price, so I am going to work on getting her dose lowered, but my dad is so afraid that her aggression will return, so we shall see. I hope you can get some straight answers concerning Bill and the Seroquel, I'll google it and see if anything comes up.

You take care, and thanks for keeping us updated, wish I were there to come help you, you are a dear,

~Kelly~

Hi again, just a thought. Could it be possible that Bill has some measure of constipation, they say about 10% of people on Seroquel do? I just kept thinking about that since he cried out in apparent pain when the hospice nurse touched that spot on his side and his bowel movements are loose and watery, which often is associated with constipation. Just a thought, I'm no doctor, obviously.

Please know we are all in this with you,

~Kelly~

i don't think there's any constipation, Kelly. His stool has been runny the last three times but the is some consistancy . But he didn't go today, so who knows. The nurse is coming out again tonight to check his urine. He peed ( I have to say pee because Sky had a mini heart attack when I said he went) a small amount around 3 but that is all for the day. His lower abdomen feels firm so he must have a full bladder.

He's had no further problems since Sunday night with the seroquel. Even the sleepiness has gone away. He was awake all day yesterday and has only slept about 2 hours today. That is no problems unless the urine problem is caused from being on that amount. He has been on 200 a day for quite awhile so it isn't that much of an increase.

Just have to wait and see what the nurse says tonight.

I hope things are going good for you Kelly, I haven't seen too much of you. Is the house finished? How are the newlyweds doing?

Hi Joyce,

It's after midnight and we just rolled in from working on the house that we are NOT in yet!!! We're close though. Water system got hooked up today to take out the arsenic, we were going to name our homestead, "Arsenic and Old Lace" any old bachelors welcome!!! But, since the arsenic will be taken out of the water, I guess not! I primed 58 spindles for the 2 staircases, took hours, but daughter in law helped me sand them when they were done. Newlyweds are doing wonderful, so cute together. Son started patroling the streets yesterday so we heard an interesting story about an hour ago from a call he went on and daughter in law filled us in from his day yesterday. He is loving it. Thanks for asking.

I'm going to go get my mom tomorrow morning and bring her to the house, she hasn't been to the new house since she left home. My dad is so torn up about it all that he doesn't want to be there when she comes but he wants her to see it since she keeps asking. I think he is scared she'll ask about coming home. We are pretty much planning on trying her at home when we get most things finished up and pretty well settled. I do so hope it works, I really want her close to us.

I do hope the nurse can shed some light on all that is going on with Bill. Yes, I can relate to Sky, my heart leapt a few times reading your posts when you said, "went". I know this must be so very hard on you, so I will keep praying for wisdom and peace.

Many hugs to you,

~Kelly~

I'll be saying a few prayers that everything works out when you bring your mother home today.
I certainly know what you mean when you say you want her close to you. Bill is due for another respite stay, but I don't want him to go until I know he is alright.

Seems like it's taking forever for the house to be finished. If it seems like that to me, I can't imagine how it seems to you. How many daughter's do you have? Maybe they would like those "any old bachelors". How do you remove arcenic from the water? I'm use to city water so I don't think I have to worry about that. All I have to worry about is all the chemicals they add to it.

When I went to check on a NH for Bill's respite, the nurse said that a lot of people place their LOs at his stage, but actually this is an easier stage to care for. The time to place is when they're wandering, showing signs of anger, agitated, that's the hardest time to care for them.
I think she is right because Bill isn't that hard to care for now. He's either in bed or his wheelchair. I don't worry about what he's doing or what he's going to do. I can actually sit down and relax at times.
Maybe your mother will be less anxious when she is back around you. Especially if she still recognizes people. It won't be easy but with you, your dad and the kids all there to help her feel safe. I believe if they feel safe and loved they are less anxious.
How long have your mother and dad been married?

The nurse didn't shed any light on what's going on with Bill. By the time she got here, he had "peed" enough to feel comfortable. She was prepared to cath him but didn't have to. She mentioned a straight cath but I don't think he would let me do that. But who knows? His regular nurse will be here today. Don't expect any answeres because they don't know any answers. He had a good night sleep and is still snoring lightly. I can hear him over the monitor.

I misplaced your number Kelly, if you still have mine, give me a call. Bill usually goes to bed about 6:30 our time. After that, I'm free for the evening.
